This document is to be considered the source of truth for the latest version of the Recategorization, which was first introduced here, and went into effect in June 19, 2025. A changelog can be found at the bottom of the document.
Minimum requirements
To be considered a rollup, or an alt-DA L2 (validium or optimium), a project must satisfy the following requirements:
-
The project must possess a fully functional proof system. Projects without a fully functional proof system allow centralized entities to settle invalid states, potentially causing loss of funds. Proof systems are required to be sound but not necessarily complete. If an optimistic proof system is used, at least 5 external challengers must be whitelisted.
-
The project must possess a dedicated DA bridge that verifies or attests to availability of data. Projects without sufficient DA guarantees allow centralized entities to finalize unavailable blocks, potentially causing loss of funds. If Ethereum DA is used (i.e. by a rollup), the proof system must correctly verify that the data commitments used as produced from either calldata or blobs. If an external DAC is used, at least 5 external members are required, and the minimum proportion of honest members needed not to relay an unavailable data commitment to not exceed 1/3. If an external DA layer is used, a DA bridge that verifies the external DA layer consensus must be used.
If a project does not satisfy the above requirements, it is classified as “Other” and moved to a dedicated tab.
